Mercedes-Benz Origins and Current Production
It’s hard to think of “luxury European cars” without thinking of Mercedes-Benz, one of the original names in automotive excellence. Known for their eye-catching designs, cutting-edge innovations, and high-quality materials, this brand and its precursors have been turning heads in the world of cars for more than 100 years.
Where is Mercedes-Benz From?
As you might already know, Mercedes-Benz is a German company, with its current headquarters in the city of Stuttgart. Its main origins lie in the company Daimler-Moteren-Gesellschaft (DMG), which merged with another to form the brand we know today.
When was Mercedes-Benz founded?
The parent company DMG was founded in 1890 by Gottleib Daimler and several other businessmen, going through several teams of directors before finding its niche in the early 1900s. However, many people consider an 1899 race in Nice, France, to be the true birthplace of the brand. An engineer who worked with DMG, Emil Jellinek, had designed a sleek new race car and he took part in the event, impressing everyone who had come to watch – which included quite a few elites of the time. Within a few years of this race, the company was shipping vehicles around Europe and even to the richest tycoons of the USA.
However, the full company that we think of today didn’t form until 1926, when DMG merged with another German auto manufacturer and its main competitor, Benz & Cie. Since then, they have consistently been one of the most popular brands in the world, making everything from luxury cars to vans to Formula 1 racers. Where did the "Mercedes-Benz" name come from?
The engineer from DMG mentioned above, Emil Jellinek, had a daughter named Mercedes – and so, when he helped design and build the new flagship vehicle that far outperformed the competition, he called it the 1901 Mercedes. The name stuck , and he trademarked it in 1902.
Benz & Cie was named after its founder, Karl Benz, a German engineer who built and patented the first internal combustion engine – widely thought of as the first true automobile – in 1886. It was called the “Benz Patent Motorwagen”. With the strong reputation and capabilities of both companies combined, they decided to call their vehicles Mercedes-Benz: a nod to their craftsmanship, quality engineering, and German roots. Who owns Mercedes-Benz now?
Mercedes-Benz is a publicly-traded company, owned by shareholders on the market. The current head of the company is Ola Källenius, a Swedish executive who also acts as the chairman of the board of management for the parent company, Daimler AG.
Where Are Mercedes-Benz Cars Made?
Despite being a German brand, Mercedes-Benz vehicles are actually produced in more than 20 countries around the world – although some factories only produce parts, fuel cells, or specialized units like buses. Manufacturing plants for Mercedes-Benz can be found in places like Argentina (the first one to be built outside of Germany, in 1951), Denmark, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Russia, Mexico, Nigeria, and even here in Canada, with a fuel cell plant in Burnaby.
Which Mercedes-Benz are made in Germany?
In addition to its original plant in Stuttgart, which opened in 1904 and currently employs nearly 20,000 people, there are other factories around Germany that produce genuine Mercedes-Benz parts and vehicles. Depending on the location, these factories make AMG engines, axles and steering columns, exhaust technology, batteries, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class, and S-Class vehicles, and more. The original location in Stuttgart also has the research & development team and the corporate headquarters.
