Ready For A New Racetrack in Calgary?
If you haven’t been able to keep up with the news, there’s been some exciting developments lately in the Calgary area – specifically, on a square mile of land north of the city. In 2017, the county council of Mountain View, near Carstairs, voted to allow the land to be redesignated…and now we’re excited to announce that construction has begun on a new racetrack for Calgary!
The Old Race City Speedway
Many Calgarians have fond memories of days spent out at the old race track at the southeast edge of the city limits. Race City Speedway opened in 1985 and for more than 25 years it gave lead-footed drivers a place to safely get the speed out of their systems. Featuring a quarter-mile drag strip, a half-mile oval, and a two-mile track, the facility hosted five major championship races and was a favourite getaway spot for drivers of high-end cars in the area. To much protest, it closed in 2011 with no replacement project in the works, and since then, drivers of fast European cars haven’t had a suitable place to really see what their vehicles can do.
The Rocky Mountain Motorsports Racetrack
Years in the making, the new race track in development is welcome news to many Albertans who are itching to hit the asphalt at full throttle – in a safe and legal way. Rocky Mountain Motorsports, who is behind the entire initiative, has been updating their site and social media with their plans about the upcoming circuit, and here’s what they’ve been up to recently.
Laying out a track length of 3.5 km divided by 16 turns and 36 m of elevation change, construction began at the end of August and has continued at an incredible pace. Crews worked through cold, snow, and pandemic restrictions to build road infrastructure and move tonnes of dirt to create roadways, berms, and water drainage channels. Initially going 24 hours a day during the week (and 12 hours a day on the weekends!), the crews made huge progress before the weather prevented a more aggressive schedule. Some of the roadways have already been paved, and the layout of the route is clearly visible to those keeping an eye out. Recently, RMM put out an animation of what drivers can expect to see when the track is finished: check out their video here! In addition to the drive track, RMM is also aiming to offer performance driving schools (and a police training academy), private and secure storage for high-end vehicles, staging and paddock areas, and more. In their initial pitch, they outlined how they’ll help boost local businesses and charities, make streets safer, create jobs, and attract world-class events. All of this, and much more, can be found on their website, so take some time to look around and follow them on social media for the most current updates. How Euroworks Can Help.

I don't believe anyone is sure yet. I'm going to keep an eye out for it and if I remember I'll come back here to let people know :)

This is great news because Calgary was begging for a new racetrack, and now, we're finally going to see one come. It's about time too.

The new racetrack in Calgary is expected to generate enthusiasm and economic opportunities for the community. How will the racetrack affect the local community and surroundings? What considerations should homeowners near the racecourse make in terms of noise and traffic?
