What's the future of Augmented Reality in Cars?
Imagine a car from the early part of the 20th century: no power steering, no enclosed cabin, no self-starting ability…the list goes on. While it would certainly make high-speed getaways more entertaining if we still had to hand-crank our engines, it's undeniable that technology has made our cars better in more ways than we can count.
As engines have progressed to become faster, more powerful, and more efficient, the rest of the vehicle has also improved. Most recently, with the advent of computers, processors, and portable and adaptable displays, it has become possible to give drivers more tools than ever before while they're on the road. These can range from safety features and warnings, to itinerary information, to on-the-go entertainment that helps keep bored passengers happy. Once restricted to dashboards and overhead fold-down screens, a new development is now bringing all of this potential together in a futuristic way - by using windshields equipped with augmented reality HUDs (heads-up displays).
Augmented reality refers to the use of technology to overlay a display screen with additional information - like, for example, using virtual reality goggles to see things that aren't actually real. When applied to cars, the possibilities are endless - you can now see, in real time and with perfect vision directly in your eyeline, many helpful details that used to be scattered around your dashboard. Route information, upcoming turns from your GPS guidance, potential collision risks, lane drift warnings, song details, and more are all now fully visible without having to take your eyes off the road. You can even sync them with your smartphone, to allow a fully integrated experience. Would you like to see restaurant star ratings above the actual restaurants as you pull up to them? What if you could see a display appear above the vehicles around you that listed the name of who it is registered to? Would you consider that an invasion of privacy or would you like it? It's easy to see a future where people can make modifications to these systems and it will feel like we're driving in a video game. Real world Mario Kart anyone? ...just kidding. (kinda)
When you invest a lot of money into a high-end car, you want it to have top of the line technology - which is why many luxury vehicles now have these augmented reality displays built-in.
