Even though the brief morning snowstorm in mid-May would like you to think otherwise, we are now well into Spring here in Calgary! It’s a time when the trees bud, the flowers bloom, and the snow melts – which means it’s a great time to go for a drive! But is your Vehicle ready for the road?
Whether it’s been in storage for the Winter, or you’ve had it out on the icy streets, a Spring tune-up is a good idea for any vehicle. For example, if you’ve been driving for the last six months or so, your car has taken a lot of punishment – from freezing weather, to increased brake and tire stress, to more idling to keep it warm. And that’s not even including the build-up of any winter road chemicals, dirt, and grime on the panels and chassis, working its way into the delicate parts of your engine and wearing them down. If, on the other hand, you’ve kept your car in storage, you can still have trouble with fluid systems (like oil or coolant), dust, or settled sediments. This little preventative tune-up can save you a lot of headaches later, by catching – and fixing – any problems early!
So what kind of things do we do during a tune-up?
Combustion engines have come a long way since they were invented over a hundred years ago. Of all the innovations introduced since then, one of the best is the fairly recent creation of direct fuel injection: it gives you Increased Power and Efficiency where you need it most.
With great power, though, comes great vehicle carbon build-up?
In these engines, the fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber of each individual cylinder, and no longer passes through the intake valves – and no longer keeps them clean through constant contact. This means that over time, deposits of carbonised fuel and oil build up both on the intake tract and its valves. This can reduce efficiency, oil life, and throttle response, as well as causing rough idling or vibrations. And the worst part? This process cannot be prevented!
